Unconscious plagarism?

I just found out the name for my main character (Kotatsu) in my last novel (Snows of Mount Shizen) is in fact the word for a Japanese table with a heater under it.
Damn.
That’ll learn me to choose character names while watching My Neighbours The Yamadas.

What to do till the next scene develops

I came home from work today with about ten litres of whipping cream that’s about to go bad. I asked to take it, much to the bafflement of my boss and co-workers, and thought I’d make ice cream. Unfortunately, my freezer is so full from Christmas that there’s not a hope in hell [...]

Once a year, or whenever I remember, I go and check out the winners of the Bulwer Lytton Competition. For those of you not familiar with the competition, the object is to write the worst first sentence to open a novel. Some of my early first lines could certainly have placed in the [...]

Random Fiction Selection

Feeling wild and crazy tonight so I thought I’d post some previously published fiction. Antiseptic House was first published in Bewildering Stories in 2005 and reprinted in the BWS First Anthology in 2006.

The Antiseptic House
This morning, when I went out onto the balcony with my coffee, I found a dead bird. It must [...]

Bad audience, great show

Just came from a great Winter Solstice belly dance show. The show was spectacular but I was stuck beside the single rudest human being in the universe.  Some pictures for y’all:

Hmmm…

I’ve recently been offered a position on a review board of a magazine. The position is voluntary and it means a fair bit of extra work that will cut into fairly limited writing time.  Still, I expect to learn a lot if I do take the job, and I can chose to opt out [...]
